Basic steps when immigrating to Finland

01

Consultation with a specialist

At the initial stage, the applicant's situation is analysed. The specialist checks whether the applicant fulfils the requirements of Finnish law for citizenship. The grounds for application (naturalisation, descent, marriage) are examined and the documents submitted are analysed.

02

Preparation of a dossier

If the result of the preliminary assessment is favourable, the necessary documents are collected and prepared. This includes: collecting references, translating and notarising documents, completing official forms and applications in accordance with the requirements of the Finnish authorities, and legally checking the entire package before submission.

03

Applying to the Finnish Immigration Service

The completed application package is submitted to the Finnish Immigration Service (Maahanmuuttovirasto) via the online service Enter Finland or in person at a service centre. After the application is submitted, the documents are checked for authenticity and, if necessary, an interview is arranged. The application is examined and a decision is made, of which the applicant is notified.

04

Obtaining a certificate of citizenship

Once the application is approved, the information on the granting of citizenship is automatically entered into the population register system. The applicant must surrender the valid residence permit, as it is cancelled when citizenship is granted. Next, a certificate of citizenship and other necessary documents are issued.

05

Finalizing the process

At the final stage, the company's lawyer helps the applicant to obtain a Finnish passport, a national identity card (ID-card), and a national insurance number and tax number, if necessary. With these documents, the Finnish citizen receives the full rights of a European Union citizen.
